We were celebrating
Alex’s birthday party.
We had a dinner party at
the Velvet Margarita and
we surprised her at the
Silver Spoon twice. Alex
and Karen went on the a
slew of eclectic events.
Dearly Departed tour to
all the Tragically
Hollywood Landmarks.
The Rolling Stones
caused a stir at the
Hollywood Bowl. The
after math blew into
Boardners and my old pal
Quentin Tarentino had a
not so little party at
our bar.
Tammie was bartending so
everyone was having a
good tome. Quentin told
John from Hollywood Book
and Poster how he used
to travel to the store
on the bus not so very
long ago.
The Pasadena Doo Dah
queen picking ceremony
was outrageous. There
were lots of drag queens
and older contestants
singing dancing and
joking their way through
the tryouts.
There were more TV
cameras than in the
previous years
inspecting the minions.
I was more than a little
nervous. We finally
picked a queen, She
played with fire. She is
very young and her mom
was with her. Her
Majesty Queen Firegirl
can be seen on our
website at:
www.pasadenadoodahparade.com
The Duke of Doo Dah was
loud. So loud he pissed
off the TV crew from the
Travel Channel, who were
there to shoot the
festivities. Fred
Willard from best in
show interviewed me
because I was MC and a
former Doo Dah queen.
Queen Sabrina is having
the Doo Dah rev up this
Friday night. She makes
the best Gumbo you have
ever had. You can see
video of the last
parades on my TV show
Tequila TV which airs on
Comcast channel 24 at
6:00pm.
The parade is Sunday the
20th at 10am on Colorado
in Pasadena so get there
early. It’s going to be
fun.
Roxy is still in the
hospital. Roxy was in
Happening Harry and the
Haptones and Texas Terri
and the Stiff Ones. He
woke up from his coma
but he still can’t speak
and he’s on a dialysis
machine. He was not
doing drugs he had
walking pneumonia and a
staff infection. His
mother won’t let him
have visitors because he
can’t really respond,
but we can still email
him at myspace.com/roxymicheals
and Maureen will read
you comments to him. He
can nod. And he’s
getting stronger and
with him in your
thoughts he will get
will soon.
Rob Zabrecy has written
a musical about the
murder of my old pal
Peter Ivers from New
Wave Theatre. Rob was in
a band I used to book
called Possum Dixon in
the 80’s.
The Erotic Museum and
The Tom of Finland
Foundation present this
solo exhibition of
illustrator Michael
Kirwan. This exhibition
was made possible by the
generous contributions
of Michael john Horne
and Design and Decor
Framers of Santa Ana.
The Museum party is
November 17 at 7pm on
Hollywood Blvd.
Kirwan's work falls into
two categories: that
work which he does to
make a living and that
which he does for his
own personal
satisfaction as an
artist. Being a gay man
who is often called upon
to represent
heterosexual scenes in
his professional life
give his commercial work
a unique perspective. He
identifies as much with
the male figures (the
subject of his work) as
with the female (the
object) and as such
objectifies neither. His
characters seem to
express a measure of
empathy with the
intended audience: they
are the viewer in a way,
or the person he
fantasizes himself to
be. It is this
connection with the
subject that makes
Kirwan's illustrations
special. They are not
empty shells filled with
sexuality; they seem
more like real growing
creatures expressing a
sexuality of their own.
The work on display in
the exhibition is from
Kirwan's professional
life. The work he does
in private and often
shows, as part of the
Tom of Finland
Foundations exhibitions
is a direct link to the
visual heritage of that
organizations namesake
but with a different
geographic origin. If
the ghost of Tom's
heroic sailors and
lumberjacks still stride
the Scandinavian
countryside, the same
spirit lives in Kirwan's
unemployed salesmen and
short-order cooks of the
Bronx and the
Waterfront. It is a
common and confident
male form, indulgent in
it's sexuality, not
apologetic.
The exhibition includes
over 30 works by the
prolific artist and a
selection of original
works by Tom of Finland.
Serious collectors are
invited to schedule a
private viewing. Kirwan
will be donating the
proceeds of all artwork
sold during the
exhibition to the Tom of
Finland Foundation's
Marcello Lupetti Artists
Fund. Michael will be on
hand to sign prints and
talk about his work.
